WOOD BORING AND PESTIFEROUS BEETLES
Family Buprestidae (Jewel or metallic beetles)
The jewel beetles are the most colourful beetles in the collection and have
been collected from all over the World. In Britain they range from 1mm to 35mm
(Chinery 1993) however the collection contains some exotic buprestids that reach
80mm in length. Many do serious damage to trees and shrubs. Buprestid larvae
bore under bark or in wood and take 1-3 years to develop. The larvae are often
called flat-headed borers due to the larvae having an expanded and flattened
anterior end (Borror et al, 1981). The tunnels of buprestid larvae can be distinguished
from those of cerambycid larvae as the buprestid tunnels are more flattened
in cross section.
