SHALLOW BURROWING LAMELLIBRANCHS

Shallow burrowers like the common cockle, Cardium sp. have round, convex, ribbed shells. They use the foot to burrow and to escape from predators. This specimen shows the gills, which serve for gas exchange and for trapping food.
