SUBCLASS NAUTILOIDEA


Species of Nautilus live in the front part of the shell; gas in the posterior chamber keeps the animal buoyant. Except when feeding, nautiluses swim backwards. When resting they hold onto rocks or crevices with their arms. They may be found at depths as great as 500m.
