CLASS OSTRACODA

Ostracods (7000 species) are tiny bivalved creatures with an extensive fossil history. An ostracod’s body is entirely enclosed in a carapace from which the well developed antennae protrude. These are used to propel the animal through the water or across the substrate. Ostracods live in a wide range of habitats. They are scavengers, herbivores, carnivores and filter feeders.
